Survey - Questionnaire
Melksham Trust is a registered charity and a company limited by guarantee. It has no share capital and was incorporated on 26 July 1985. A members’ subscription list is maintained, currently we have around 30 members, management is undertaken by a committee of volunteers meeting monthly.
It was established to preserve our historical and architectural heritage, and promote environmental improvements in the area. Through publications, town trail guides, guided walks, and other activities it fosters interest in the town and its history. It aims to draw assistance from local and central government, commerce, funding agencies, and the public, and harness all the resources for the benefit of the town.
About the Trust
Buildings in the area Listed in 1985, (Town & Country Planning Act 1971), Totals: 1 - Grade I , 4 - Grade II*,
217 - Grade II.
Mullbery Cottage Church Street
Through strict planning and conservation controls, and rapidly rising property values, this stock of buildings has largely been retained. The Trust campaigned vigorously to save the Mulberry Cottages, restored to residential use these buildings now compliment the historical area of Church Street. Similarly, the restoration of Market Place (Bransons Motor Works) has retained an important section of the Market Place facade. Around 30 owners of historic buildings have undertaken repairs and restoration. This has been encouraged by the Trust and the District Council in a Conservation Area Partnership scheme, the Regency Terrace in Spa Road is now nearing completion. Street surveys have encouraged local authorities to undertake remedial works.
Guided tours of many neighbouring towns and villages have been arranged, we are surrounded by a rich heritage of buildings and landscape shaped by our agricultural and industrial past.
To aid the enjoyment and understanding of our own town the Trust have produced Town Trail guides researched and written by the late Isobele Ide.
